If you say that Phu Quoc specialties have nothing special that brings the sweetest results, it is Pepper. In the arid, windy and dry land, pepper brings an extremely special source of income for the people here.
Like fish sauce, Phu Quoc pepper is always a famous specialty. A precious spice of the whole country. Phu Quoc pepper is famous for its thin-grained seeds, thin skin, dense, pungent and aromatic peppery.
Favorable weather and land with a long experience, pepper in Phu Quoc grows green on a large area.
Today pepper is looked everywhere like the North Island, Bung Goi, Ganh Gio, Ong Lang, Cua Can, Suoi Da and Khu Tuong. But the most and the most famous is the Statue Area. Famous for the immense pepper gardens connecting each row, running far away.
Pepper is grown on fertile soil at the foot of the mountain or on the banks of a stream. Planting takes a lot of time and effort to spend three years from planting new trees to harvesting.
First, the soil is porous and carefully cleaned, then planted in rows, equidistant from each other to form a plot of land, surrounded by aisles, adjacent to a walkway with a drainage ditch. Pepper Tree is a kind of climbing plant like betel, so it is used to grow it, known as pepper posts. posts are usually made from the core of precious woods available in the forest such as Làu táu, ổi, Thanh Trà, Chai … these trees can withstand wind and rain for 10-40 years.
When the soil is cleared, install stakes, wait for rain to grow pepper. Immediately water and shade the cord if it is sunny. Other essential work for the first year is to keep the garden clear of grass, loose soil, and sufficient moisture.
By the beginning of the next rainy season, fertilize. After a month of fertilizing, conduct short-body sand to leave about 70cm of the original (Cut tops will be selected as planting varieties)
In the dry season, fill the surrounding soil with pepper and irrigate manure or other special things that gardeners think are both good for plants and increase the taste of pepper.
At the end of the second year, pepper will blossom, but the gardeners will stop and leave only for the following year. They think that taking the peppercorns early will be weak and the yield will not be plentiful.
In the third year, at the beginning of the rainy season, fertilizer is applied to pepper like the second year, but it is more dominant. (is dried shrimp), cow manure (for gardeners, pepper trees with cows it is shaped with the shadow). Around July, pepper starts to bear fruit, from young fruit to ripe fruit to about 4 months. So at the end of the year the pepper began to ripen and pick.
To be fragrant pepper pepper, people have to go through so much effort and great experience. if properly and properly cared for, the new pepper can be harvested for a long time (20 – 40 years), and if the tree is not well cared for it will easily die early.
How many pungent seeds are so much sweat of the growers pouring out!
